Global Leaders Working Together for Political Action on Antimicrobial Resistance

    Ms Ummy Mwalimu

    Member of Parliament and former Minister of Health United Republic of TANZANIA

    Biography

     

    Ms Ummy Mwalimu is a distinguished public leader with over 20 years of experience in health governance and policy and strategy development and implementation.  As a two-time Minister of Health of the United Republic of Tanzania (2015 - 2020 and 2022 - 2024) she led on the development of comprehensive national strategies for combating critical health challenges, including antimicrobial resistance. She spearheaded Tanzania's AMR situational analyses, developing Tanzania first national AMR action plan (2017-2022) and pioneering AMR public awareness campaigns in Tanzania. 

    She has served in various other positions, including Minister of State in the President’s Office (Regional Administration and Local Government) in 2021 and Deputy Minister in the Vice President's Office (Environment) in 2014. She was as a board member of the Global Vaccine Alliance (GAVI) representing Anglophone Africa. Currently, she is serving as a Member of Parliament for Tanga Urban Constituency.
